"Petty signs with Ford!" Those four words tore through the racing world like a hot knife through butter while loyalists threw their hands up in disbelief. King Richard's defection was in part because Plymouth hadn't built a Dodge Daytona counterpart for the NASCAR circuit, in addition to the fact that Petty Enterprises wanted to be the sole racing parts distributor for Plymouth at the time. Plymouth weathered the backlash publically while privately scurrying to create a car to lure Richard back to Plymouth. That car? The 1970 Plymouth Superbird. Production models languished on salesroom floors due in part to NASCAR having increased the homologation requirement from 500 units to 2,000. These cars were highly specialized, seen as being in excess in proportion to the hottest street cars of the period. Fast-forward to today, Superbirds are highly collectible and are the star attractions at car shows and auctions, pulling top dollar and generating real excitement. What a difference a few decades makes! Each volume in the In Detail Series provides an introduction and historical overview, an explanation of the design and concepts involved in creating the car, a look at marketing and promotion, an in-depth study of all hardware and available options, and an examination of where the car is on the market today. Also included are paint and option codes, VIN and build tag decoders, as well as production numbers.… (plus d'informations)

Love Author Geoff Stunkard, he had written so many awesome detailed books on classic muscle cars. So many great photos, and easy to read and follow. As always another great book to have if you like muscle cars. Thanks CarTech & LibraryThing. ( )

A beautiful book...pristine..fantastic..great pictures...chock full of all things 1970 Plymouth Superbird cars!! The publishers at Car Tech are, in my opinion, the leading Car publishers out there. Never disappointed. I can't seem to say that enough but it's absolutely true.

Author Geoff Stunkard has done the car world good by creating such a great book. Beautiful..yes a car book can be considered beautiful. I was fascinated with the quality, the pictures, and the content. Proud to own and add this to my Car Tech Book collection.

Thanks as always to great people at Car Tech and to Geoff Stunkard for my free copy of this book via giveaway. I read. I reviewed on several platforms voluntarily and with all honesty. ( )

1970 PLYMOUTH SUPERBIRD (Muscle Cars in Detail No. 11) by Geoff Stunkard took me back to my youth. Think of a young guy who’s been socking away his money to buy a hot car to, admittedly, impress every girl he could. But it had to be a muscle car that would be the envy of all his friends. With a little help of mom and dad, and tons of elbow grease for the past few years, he finally had enough to buy the car of his dreams.
And he does it. Plunks down the cold, hard cash, signs the papers, (gets insured on the beauty before driving off the lot) and tools around town showing off the hottest ride any of his friends had ever seen.
And not an hour into his big one man parade, his Road Runner, while sitting at a stop light, has a Superbird pull up next to him. There is a spotty faced kid sitting at the wheel grinning a grin that just makes you want to kick his teeth in. When the light turns, the Superbird shoots off down the road and you’re left wondering what just happened.
The Road Runner was a great car, but the 1970 Superbird was a nice RACE car. While outperforming the RR at almost every turn, it also was intentionally designed by Plymouth to blow the doors off of anything on the track at that time.
Geoff Stunkard has provided a detailed look into this magnificent machine, giving the reader every detail needed to authenticate his or her vehicle, cars they are thinking about buying, or parts needed to bring an old hulk back to life. Every possible option that was available is listed along with promotional materials used by the company to spell out why this was the machine to have.
As with all CarTech books I’ve seen, there are tons of photos displaying every aspect of The Bird. Included are a good number of race themed pics that held display Richard Petty’s love of the Bird and how he put it to good use.
This is a fun read for car enthusiasts, racers, gear heads, and restorers. Every day folks might get a kick out of most of it just because of the open and inviting way Mr. Stunkard has written the details, how the illustrations highlight the written material, and how much enthusiasm escapes from the pages.
This is a great addition to you car book library, even if all the other books are MoPar manuals and Chilton’s guides.
I won this book through the LibraryThing program. ( )

CarTech has done it again with another book in their Muscle Cars in Detail. The Plymouth Superbird is an interesting car that has risent to near cult status after not being the #1 Plymouth. The book opens with a interesting history of Superbird and the car's role in NASCAR. When you think of NASCAR and the Superbird, Richard Petty automatically comes to mind.

After the history, the author provides a detail breakout of the Superbird's specifics: available options, how to decode the VIN and broadcast sheet.

With only ~2000 1970 Superbirds built, the author provides some insight on restoring a Superbird.

Geoff Stunkard has written a great book for Muscle Car fans.

I received this book as part of the Library Thing Early Reviewers Program ( )

The latest Car Tech book I received from Early Reviewers, 1970 Plymouth Superbird: Muscle Cars In Detail No. 11 by Geoff Stunkard, is a real treat for Superbird fans and anyone else who appreciates a great looking classic car and attention to detail. This trade paperback volume is printed on heavy stock paper with many color and black and white photos. In comparison to other Car Tech books I've read, this one seemed to have more text areas (always interesting) and fewer/smaller photos, which could be either a cause of or reason for the smaller size of this book. Either way, I am glad to have received it from Early Reviewers and enjoyed it a lot. ( )
