In my opinion, this is a wonderful book. The language used throughout the story was very organized and patterned as well as the writing. Each page follows a sequential order and the characters from the train explain the plot in an organized fashion. For example, the first “shiny new engine” train comes along and the broken train asks if they can help. When that train declines, a second “passenger train” comes along and they pose the same question, and the train is too tired and declines. By the time the third “sad, tired train” comes along, the broken train asks again if they could help push her over the hill, and they cannot make it. The fourth and final “sweet engine that could” comes along and offers to help. The plot is very organized and structured because the author follows a sequential order of trains coming in to help. The illustrations are very brightly colored and enhance the story. The book pushes readers to think about the deeper meaning and broaden perspectives about teamwork and accomplishing anything even when it seems impossible. The big idea is that problems can be solved if everyone works together and can collaborate. ( )

This is a great book for first graders. It tells us that if you try hard enough, and you believe in yourself, you can accomplish anything.
