This is a very low-key book that seems intent on understating the life of the title character. Pierre Toussaint sounds like an extraordinary person. Where others might have run for the hills, this man took on burdens that would have baffled the best of us. And, as if that wasn't enough, he dealt with those burdens in an amazing way all the time while acting in a saintly manner. It must not be lost that the word saint is within this man's name, possibly by happenstance but utterly regardless. It would not be fair to a potential reader to attempt a synopsis of Pierre's life -- there are so many layers. Still, I would say if one could only find time to read one book between now and December 31, 2023, this would be the book to read. ( )
