"In Walking in the City with Jane, award-winning author Susan Hughes tells the fictionalized story of Jane Jacobs through a celebration of city life and grassroots activism. Even as a young girl, Jane was an independent thinker with an extraordinary imagination and sense of wonder. She was known to challenge her teacher and was often found playing with her imaginary friends, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and Cedric the warrior. Always curious and engaged by her surroundings, Jane grew up to be an exceptional woman who cared deeply about her city. When urban planner Robert Moses proposed an expressway to cut across Manhattan, Jane rallied the local community to save the neighbourhood and even got arrested for standing up for her beliefs. Gorgeously illustrated by Valérie Boivin, Walking in the City with Jane offers a glimpse into the mind of one of our greatest urban thinkers whose influence on cities is still felt today."--… (plus d'informations)

This picture book is about Jane Jacobs, a champion in the fight to keep neighbourhoods healthy and thriving. This is a fictionalized accounting of her life, but it is not really for young readers. Perhaps late primary/junior (ages 8 to 11). When planners tried to bulldoze neighbourhood to put in highways or run them through parks, Jane got her family and neighbours to picket and protest. She even got thrown in jail at one point. The story starts with a young girl in school who had a mind of her own and follows her through her moves to New York and Toronto. A good book when studying about towns and cities as well as teaching children that they can make a difference if they stand up for what they believe in. The illustrations were okay, but not outstanding. This book is a good example of perseverance and standing up for yourself and beliefs. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley. ( )

I was curious to see what this book would bring, but pleasantly surprised by wonderful snippets of Jane Jacobs life. There were amusing moments of young Jane Jacobs in the classroom that anyone could identify. Also, the book explored the wonderful idea of observing and what beautiful changes can be made around you when you observe, examine, and advocate for change. Whether you have a loud voice or a small voice, you can speak out powerfully to craft the environment around you!

In an amusing turn Robert Moses features throughout as a villain of sorts, advocating against ideas that are illustrated as leading to a brighter, greener, and friendlier city. Smoggy cars fill the page, driving furiously, and crowding out poor pedestrians whenever Moses enters the story. ( )

This is a fictionalized account of a real person who spoke out and protested to save cities from expressways. It was written well and I like the illustrations but I am not sure the story of Jane Jacobs was exciting enough to make into a book. #firstworldproblems ( )
