"As a film director, Wes Craven gave you nightmares and made you scream. As a novelist, he'll thrill you with a shocking tale born in cutting-edge science and bred in eternal fear." Hope for an ingenious superweapon is dying as physicist Peter Jance's health fails. But with one brilliant, controversial, and top-secret operation, new life is granted: ...to the U.S. military's dream defense system, ...to a torrid love triangle transcending time and memory, ...and to a cold and unspeakable government conspiracy to create an elite circle of immortals.… (plus d'informations)

Writing these 'reviews' sometimes creates a sortof potential 'meta-review' in my head. I just wrote one about Arthur C. Clarke's "The Fountains of Paradise" wch is shelved next to this bk, "Fountain Society", in my library b/c of "Craven" following "Clarke". Coincidentally, they both have "Fountain" in the title. Maybe I shd write a novel called "Craven Paradise" that's all about the sex life of microbes living on both bk jackets. "The torrid love life of tiny immortal creatures on the elevator to the sky!" screams the advertising copy!

Anyway, I like Wes Craven as a filmmaker & I was pleasantly surprised by reading this novel of his. It's basically a Michael Crichton style thriller but I think it's better b/c I don't really like Crichton. The back cover copy makes it seem more cliché than I remember it as being: "At its center is a sinister plot to confer immortality on a select, elite group of government scientists - a plot of such fiendish, cold brutality and evil that it has been kept secret - including from most of those who might one day benefit from it." When I saw this book on the shelf I thought Wes Craven, this HAS to be good. When I read the book I was disappointed and pleasently surprised as well. We all know about Wes Cravens main body of work, but this was definately different. This story is about a secret group of government scientists, led by Peter Jance, who think they have figured out the closest thing to immortality. As Jance's health begins to take a turn for the worse, the super weapon he is creating for the military may die with him. Government corruption, a love triangle, and conspiracy make this a very interesting story. It's hard to describe the story in more depth without messing it up but once you figure out how they have increased the life span of characters involved you begin to unravel the story a bit on your own.
I would definately recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good suspense novel or medical thriller. ( )

I don't recommend this book at all. Wes Craven should stick to the big screen and leave writing for WRITERS who know what they are doing. This book represents 5 hours of my life that I will never get back. ( )
