This is one of those classic Nolo works that covers a niche subject, and covers it well. Other reviewers have called this a "bible" for those with a special ed child and I can't disagree. This is one of the more practical (rather than "overview" or "theoretical") works on a very confusing topic. The top down approach, starting with an overview then burrowing down to specifics, is well organized and extremely thorough and dense (as in lots of sources, lots of citations, lots of references for further assistance).

The appendices (A-D) are extensive and useful. There are 133 pages in the first three appendices which give extensive sources on pertinent laws and regulations, as well as listings of support groups and other organizations for all 50 states. Appendix D consists of 20 tear out forms covering things like "Goals Chart," "Request for Files," "IEP Preparation Checklist," etc.

This is a must buy for any individual with a special ed child, and would be a good purchase for academic libraries with education programs, as well as law libraries.

Know your rights, because they aren't always spelled out for you in the school system. This is an excellent resource for parents and teachers. Very readable and well indexed. ( )
