A Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2018!

A Vulture Best Sci-Fi and Fantasy Book of 2018!

In a land similar to South Africa, twin brothers are beset by powerful forces beyond their understanding or control in this thrilling blend of science fiction, horror, magic, and dark humor??evocative of the works of Lauren Beukes, Ian McDonald, and Nnedi Okorafor??from the author of The Prey of Gods.

Two brothers.
Seven vices.
One demonic possession.
Can this relationship survive?

Auben Mutze has more vices than he can deal with??six to be exact??each branded down his arm for all the world to see. They mark him as a lesser twin in society, as inferior, but there's no way he'll let that define him. Intelligent and outgoing, Auben's spirited antics make him popular among the other students at his underprivileged high school. So what if he's envious of his twin Kasim, whose single vice brand is a ticket to a better life, one that likely won't involve Auben.

The twins' strained relationship threatens to snap when Auben starts hearing voices that speak to his dangerous side??encouraging him to perform evil deeds that go beyond innocent mischief. Lechery, deceit, and vanity run rampant. And then there are the inexplicable blood cravings. . . .

On the southern tip of an African continent that could have been, demons get up to no good during the time of year when temperatures dip and temptations rise. Auben needs to rid himself of these maddening voices before they cause him to lose track of time. To lose his mind. And to lose his . . .

What a crazy ride- plot twist upon plot twist. A lot of the developments in the last 40% of the book feel like they come from wayyy out of left field, likely because the POV is restricted entirely to Auben. I'd have liked to see how the world looked from some of the other characters' eyes. ( )

Set in an alternate Cape Town, Africa, populated by twins -- one deemed lesser than their sibling from birth based on their ratio of vices to virtues. Fascinating gender norms. Religion versus science. A family whose dysfunction is taken to the next level: lies, secrets, betrayal, a mother I'm still not sure whether I liked or loathed; oh yeah, and the brothers may be gods... Just like with Prey of Gods so much going on, so much imagination, so much to think about. I'm really looking forward to what Drayden does with her next book, Escaping Exodus, a "space drama."

Notes to self:

"And truth in the hands of a duplicitous person is perhaps the most dangerous weapon of all." (p.85)

"Tempers flare. Maybe there's some cussing. Maybe even a fight. But tempers fade eventually. Doubt lingers. Burrows through your heart, steals away your happiness. Slowly consumes you from within." (p.165)

"It is truly unfair that the only person capable of healing my fury is the one who has given me my deepest, coldest scars." (p. 354)

SPOILER on god aspect:

Auben has Icy Blue (a god who consumes blood; kills with a kiss). Kasim has Grace (a god who can heal others). Only when they reverse their virtues and vices do the gods "fit" them.

The pacing is problematical in that everything is so unfamiliar that the reader rarely can know where she is and if she is moving. In fact there is a lot of incident and action, but though the last portion makes sense in itself it seems tacked onto the book that preceded it. ( )

Initial thoughts: “Nicky Drayden’s new novel is just as quirky as her previous novel. I cannot say I enjoyed it as much either. There are shifts in narrator perspective which are abrupt and difficult to discern at times. Plus, the point of the story is not very apparent at times. You have to wade through a lot of detail to understand what point she is trying to make. Still, I continue to give her props for something completely unique as well as highly inclusive and diverse.”

Now: My initial thoughts regarding Temper remain valid. I enjoyed her previous novel much more than I did this one. It has been two weeks, and I cannot say I remember much of the plot, although I can remember almost everything that happens in that other novel. I still remain confused as to what she is trying to accomplish within Temper. I have to give her much-deserved props for her diversity and inclusivity, as her cast of characters runs the gamut of sexual preference and gender fluidity. Yet, my continuing impression is that she was attempting to question blind religious and political obedience but that the final story adversely skewed her messaging. The cast is huge, and it is way too easy to get lost among the myriad of characters. Plus, one has to come to accept, or at least understand, her strange new world of twins, virtues, and vices. In her novels, Ms. Drayden shows us that she is not afraid to push the envelope, but I wonder if, in Temper, she pushed it a little too far for her skills.
