fall of insulla leads to investigation corruption while Tiber builds to flood stage

When an insula collapses, killing more than 200 people, Decius Caecilius Metellus the Younger, who as an aedile is responsible for enforcing the building code, investigates. Was it purely shoddy workmanship and materials or was something more sinister going on?

The eighth in the series, and a fine example. Decius continues to rise through the course of honor and is now an aedile. His main worry is the cost of the games that he will have to give as part of his office. But he has other responsibilities, which lead him into the investigation of a a building collapse. Someone important was clearly involved, but it's not easy for Decius to find out who, and it starts to look dangerous as well. Interesting and fully developed characters, and the usual fascinating view of Roman life. ( )
