Broken Bones
5 Stars

D.I. Kim Stone and her team become ensnared in the cruel and vicious world of modern-day slavery when they investigate a series of murders of local prostitutes as well as a case of child abandonment when a baby is left on the steps of the local police station.

Broken Bones is the best book in the series so far and that is saying a lot considering the superb quality of the previous installments.

Both cases are intense and gripping from the start and the explanations are blood curdling. It was very interesting to see the overriding theme of female betrayal resurfacing throughout the narrative.

It was also good to have the team back on track and working so well together after the events of the previous case. Dawson continues to surprise me with his actions and it seems that he is finally living up to the potential that Kim sees in him.

Looking forward to the next book. ( )

I have been reading this series in order, and each one seems better than the last. I believe that is because I am getting to know and like the characters more as I read. Kim and Bryant are such a great team. They balance each other perfectly, although of course Kim always gets her way when she wants. But Bryant always tries to remind her of the legalities, etc. While she's perfectly happy to break in to a building to gain entry, Bryan will go next door and nicely talk to a neighbor to allow him to cross their back yard over a fence. And one time, when a door was locked, Bryant knocked on the glass window "Just in case". After a few seconds, he tried the handle, which was locked. Kim says "Perhaps if you talk nicely to it". Then she picks up a rock and smashes the window.

In the beginning of the story, they find a baby abandoned in front of the station. Kim brings it in, but there's no one to give it to right away, and she's pretty freaked out; a lot more than if she were facing a killer. When the baby started to cry in her office, she called Bryant and said she needed him at the station immediately. "And hurry, Bryant," she said. "this is an emergency situation." Bryant gets there, takes the baby, and rocks him whereupon the baby stops crying.

Everyone comes to her office to make fun of her and her baby, because she's the last person anyone would expect to be around a baby. But really, she does care about children, abused women, and other helpless people.

There are plenty of helpless people in this story, and of course a few to take advantage of them in any way possible, including selling young girls and loansharking. Some of it was very sad.

Anyway, this is becoming one of my favorite series. I'm glad there are several more books to go. ( )

Broken Bones is book seven in the Kim Stone series and the series is going strong! I pretty much throw myself over this book when I got it since I always find that Angela Marson's has an uncanny ability to write crime books that make your heart ache. And, this book is not an exception.

Sex workers have a low position in society and this book really explores their situations. Their vulnerability and tragic life. Marson's really knows how to write about situations that feel so right in time. That's what I love about this series. From racism in the last book to this book with young girls falling prey to other people's vileness. She knows how to write engaging stories that are tuned into the problem of this modern world. I won't give away too much of the storyline, but reading about these young girls and how other people prey on them, well it's awful!

The story is straight through engaging and thrilling. And, also very sad and of course. There is so much evil in the world and this book truly shows that. It's also surprising, although I did suspect that there must be some twist to the story.

There is a sideline story to this book, about a baby that has been left on the steps at the police station, and that storyline was equally interesting to follow. And, it grabbed your heart just as much as the murder of the sex worker storyline did.

I want to thank the publisher for providing me with a free copy through NetGalley for an honest review! ( )
