The author was an engineer, or possibly an industrial chemist ( I remember a bio in New Worlds in the 60's, which is giving away my age!). How about the quartermaster (storeman) who is a convicted thief, and the leader of the UE squad carries a stock of official pardons to get him oput of gaol when he is busted. Dated, but still superb. No I will not sell my copy! I loved the 'Unorthodox Engineers' stories when they originally appeared in the 'New Writings in SF' series in the early 70s, and I've been looking out for a copy of this collection ever since I learned of its existence. I really enjoyed reading them again, although it's fairly easy to criticise the characterisation and some of the writing style - and some of the 'future' technology is a little archaic (video tapes?)... Still worth a read if you like the idea of a bunch of (slightly) wacky engineers applying lateral thinking and improvisation to the problems presented by a series of increasingly bizarre planets (particularly the one where 1+1 = 1.58!) aucune critique | ajouter une critique

The Unorthodox Engineers are a misfit bunch of engineers, commanded by maverick engineer Fritz van Noon and including, amongst others, a convicted bank robber as quartermaster (on the entirely-sound grounds that he was likely to be the most capable person for the job). They solve problems of alien technology and weird planets in the future. "The Unorthodox Engineers" contains: The Railways Up on Cannis (1959) The Subways of Tazoo (1964) The Pen and the Dark (1966) Getaway from Getawehi (1969) The Black Hole of Negrav (1975) Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
