The ones that disappeared is about children who have been trafficked. They work underground in a marijuana house ensuring that the plants don't die. Their role means that they have no sunlight and they count the days by marking when the sprinklers come on.
Esra, Marin and Isa have been enslaved through debt that their family owes, or through being refugee children without parents who nobody cares for and looks after, or through trickery.
The children escape when an electrical fire shorts the sprinkler system and the plants all die. When one of Orlando's thugs comes to check the plants, the hero of the story Ezra stabs him with a knife and kills him. Marin distracts the police so that six year old Isa and Ezra can escape. They run to the drains where they meet a boy called Skeet who steals things to feed them and helps them build a Riverman out of mud who magically comes alive (? or is it just a crazy bum wearing the same raincoat?)Ezra and Isa are running for their lives because they belong to Orlando and he has even tattooed their wrists so that everyone knows they belong to him and his Snake gang so they have to get far away but first they have to rescue Marin.
This book is very gut-wrenching violent and quite difficult to read. It is not for the faint-hearted. It gives us an insight into the thoughts and feelings of children who have the worst of lives; who are unloved and unwanted. In this story it is their wish for a better life that helps them to eventually triumph .
The supernatural element was a bit weird and the whole way through I kept wondering what country it was set in...US, UK or even Australia? I guess she kept in vague to keep us guessing. ( )
