Thunderstorms are rolling across the summer sky. Every time one breaks, Rose Bowan loses consciousness and has vivid, realistic dreams about being in another woman's body. Is Rose merely dreaming? Or is she, in fact, inhabiting a stranger? Disturbed yet entranced, she sets out to discover what is happening to her, leaving the cocoon of her family's small repertory cinema for the larger, upended world of someone wildly different from herself. Meanwhile her mother is in the early stages of dementia, and has begun to speak for the first time in decades about another haunting presence: Rose's younger sister. In Little Sister, one woman fights to help someone she has never met, and to come to terms with a death for which she always felt responsible. With the elegant prose and groundbreaking imagination that have earned her international acclaim, Barbara Gowdy explores the astonishing power of empathy, the question of where we end and others begin, and the fierce bonds of motherhood and sisterhood.… (plus d'informations)

Whew! It's a hot and muggy day here, with thundershowers predicted- simply the best weather for reading Little Sister. In the story, thunderstorms transport one character into the body of another - but why? And what happens because of it?
Well, I won't tell you because you deserve the pleasure of a wander through another of Barbara Gowdy's excellent books to find out for yourself. It's worth it to read about an old-times movie theatre, a mother dancing with dementia, affairs and men and women living their lives out in Toronto, under stormy skies.
I'm becoming a total Gowdy groupie. Her books are stimulating and fun, they make you think and feel while surrounding you with wonderful language and character development.
But this one you should read on a humid summer day. The rumbles of thunder will fit right in... ( )

Rose loses her sister tragically. This slowly unfolds in a storyline quite unlike anything else I've read. Rose changes bodies when lightening flashes. She owns an old style theatre with a mother living with disillusional dementia. This side line is told with great humor and compassion. Rose feels responsible for the death of her sister and it becomes clear that these psycotic episodes is how she deals with this. This novel is a very interesting exploration in to what the human mind is capable of without resorting to antics or horror but with compassion and kindness. ( )

This book is well written and, for the most part, a page turner. I was intrigued from the very start. Unfortunately, the ending felt a bit weak compared to the rest of the story. I don't mind that there wasn't a big, life altering ending (sometimes books about life ought to just be about life and don't need a traditional storybook ending), it just felt a bit abrupt and soft compared to the tension and chaos that had built up.

All that said, it's a solid book with an intriguing story and characters that are both likable and interesting. ( )

Rose Bowan is dealing with a lot. Her father has died, leaving her in charge of the family business, an old movie theatre specializing in old movies. Her mother has dementia and is becoming increasingly unstable. She has a boyfriend, but the relationship lacks passion and momentum. Her sister died years ago, something Rose continues to try to come to terms with. And, during thunderstorms, Rose recently began inhabiting the body of a young editor, Harriet Smith.

Barbara Gowdy writes so well. I usually avoid magical realism, but she makes it work. In dealing with Harriet's life, Rose somehow becomes better at dealing with her own. I enjoyed this story very much. ( )

I love the idea behind this book; the execution a little less so. ( )
