( )Wow, what a book! This is the 33rd year of consistent publication of Writers of the Future, the most popular and oldest writing & illustrator contest in the USA and with a free entry fee thousands apply but few are chosen. Who are these chosen few? Well a few stories I really liked includes a washed up magician no longer in the court of the Maharajah, and yet suspects his enemy of 50 years is returning to take his revenge. Or the demon who under threat of his life, takes over a man to do his bidding of murder and mayhem with children -- how to stop him? Ingenious tale. Or genetically enhanced monsters which engage a woman knight of sorts with a pretty useless guide who turns out to be not so useless. Or the town ravaged by a dragon many years ago, her killer being a man with a daughter, in a town that is emptying fast. Who is his daughter? She meets her destiny towards the end, quite thrilling. I've been reading most of the anthology of Writers of the Future since its first book in the 1980s. Looking forward to another 33 years! I added it to my classroom library, out of curiosity, and it inspired a budding young writer to continue her pursuit. She and I differed on the stories we liked, but it did give us a great way to connect and communicate.Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. This is the 33d volume in the annual series of short stories by new (or newly published) writers of science fiction or fantasy. Each volume features some of the year's best short fiction in these fields, highlighting new (mostly) young authors and illustrators. This year's volume contains the "fourteen best tales from the Writers of the Future international writer's program" as well as three short stories from well-established authors. Stories range in topic and scope from a tale of magic set in an alternate historical Arabian land, a tale of a female astronaut in an encounter with an inscrutable alien life form, and a tale of a young boy who must face his fears and emotions to save his father's life. Each of the stories in this volume is well written and illustrated, and worth the investment of your time. Recommended! I probably never would have read these authors except they were all placed in one convenient book. From the complex to the simple each story had something that drew you in. I would definitely recommend this book.Appartient à la série
