The fourth grade class is off to the zoo. The teacher explains to the class what an adverb is and they are to use their journal to describe what they see and hear at the zoo using as many adverbs as they can. Allen and Andrew have a little contest to see who can use the most. Along the way they discover different types of adverbs (i.e. such as comparative and superlative) and the various spellings (i.e. add ly, change y to i and add ly etc.) Their descriptions really improve as the story progresses.
A great concept in how to teach parts of speech to children and to encourage the use of them in their everyday speech and writing. There are also resources at the end of the book to use. A book that should be in all school and classroom libraries.
