A young child describes the early-morning milk delivery and their affection for the horse, Tony, who pulls the cart. Stead's soft colors and detailed pencil (the horse's eyelashes!) complement the old-fashioned tone and gentle mood of the story.

Atmospheric and lovely. A very quiet sort of book about a different time. ( )

This story has some of the most beautiful illustrations. I adore the sketchy style it was drawn in, it feels nostalgic but I don't know why. I loved horses as a child and have always known they were special animals, but this super cute short story has given them even more special qualities. This story is such a perfect little drop of happiness to brighten your day. When the narrator is talking about the smiles brought on by the handsome horse, it truly brings a smile to my face too. I recommend. ( )

Every morning Tom and his horse Tony go to deliver milk. And every morning this young boy waits outside to see them. The boy and Tony seem to have a bond in the story. This book uses few words and simple but beautiful sketched images. The images have almost no background and focus on the horse usually. This lack of background makes it feel like a dream when you are reading it, as if you are seeing it in your own mind. I feel like this lack of description throughout the story allows the reader to read in-between the lines and make up their own meaning to the story as if they were the boy getting up very early every morning to see Tony. This children's picture book is told in first-person point of view by a customer receiving dairy products by driver Tom and his horse, Tony. The customer (no name mentioned) describes Tom and Tony's daily early morning routine to deliver dairy products from door-to-door. The customer describes how they are always eager to be greeted by Tom and Tony in the early morning. It is easy to conclude that the customer is well-fond of Tony by their description of the horse. The illustrations, color, choice, and shading provide the early-morning setting that is portrayed in the book. The lack of detail involving the location, and further information about the customer leave room for readers to make predictions and assumptions about the story line. ( )
