This is, if you want to understand just how different Laura's POV is, in no shape or form a stand alone from the Touchstone books.

Laura views Muina, the Setari, Selkie and the Taren society entirely differently then Cassandra (her daughter) because she has a very different place in it.

As much as I love Cass' style, Laura is probably closer to how I would react. Likely helps I'm closer to her age then Cass'.

Also dude Laura and her sister Sue would SO BE my sister Tegan and I. ( )

A “slice-of-life geek-fest”/romance about a middle-aged woman adjusting to life on a new planet. It is set after the events of the Touchstone Trilogy and Gratuitous Epilogue, and I’m not sure whether it qualifies as a sequel or as a companion novel. In terms of plot, it technically stands alone, but much of the appeal is in seeing familiar characters - Cass and co. - from someone else’s perspective. It feels a bit like fanfiction. Except it's not.

I found it highly entertaining. I particularly liked Laura’s relationship with her sister, and all their fandom references.

"You were very subdued. What happened to your scheme for testing Tsur Selkie's credulity?"
"I know! I couldn't do it! Whenever I thought about being silly I got all tongue-tied. Tongue-tied, Laura. Me! And I was looking forward to this all week, thinking of all the things I could try to get him to include in his official reports. I was going to tell him that Maze is a beautiful cinnamon roll, too precious for this world, too pure. Just to see how he'd react."
"He'd probably agree with you. If you explained what that meant."
"But would he put it in his reports? In Cass' diaries, they're always putting everything in reports. I was hoping to introduce all the KOTIS stuffed-shirts to Tumblr-speak, and convince them that's how Earth people usually talk."
