Fínasta safn nóvella af vísindasögum. Margir af þekktustu vísindasagnahöfunum fyrri tíma eiga hér sögur sem eru ákafleg ólíkar en engu að síður taka þær á ólíkum og spennandi athugunum. ( )

Great novellas, although I tend to prefer short stories, selected by the Nebula (SFWA) people. Good audio performances. A couple of these were merely ok, most were very good, a couple great. I love this series, and would like try listen to Vol 3 once it comes out as an audiobook someday.

THE MIDAS PLAGUE by Frederic Pohl was probably my favorite.

This (and 2-A) aren't as good as the Short Story collection in Vol 1, but still in my "5 stars" territory. ( )

Rogue Moon - Algis Budrys
The Specter General - Theodore R. Cogswell
The Machine Stops - E. M. Forster

My Thoughts:

After the complete stinker that was the set of Novellas (Vol. 2A), I went into this read very trepidatiously. Thankfully, the first novella by Asimov set me at my ease, as I'd read the short story it was based on in one of his collections. Familiarity not only can breed contempt but it can also breed contentedness. I'd also read the full novel of Budry's Rogue Moon and Pohl's The Midas Plague.

With that, I experienced none of the “can we get this over this, please?!?!?” that I experienced in the previous volume. These novellas I found interesting and engaging and I kept on wanting to read them. I don't know why I enjoyed ALL of the novellas in this volume and none of the ones in 2A. Honestly, it baffles me.

If you want to experience SF in all its glory and all its stigma, read this series. The first volume of short stories is just sublime, Vol 2A is shamefully boring and this 2B volume brings things back to a more balanced view. I believe there are two more volumes (Volumes 3 and 4) but I think I'm going to pass since I doubt they're all on the level of Vol 1.

From the doorway of the short corridor between the only two rooms in the travel-head of the spaceship, Mario Esteban Rioz watched sourly as Ted Long adjusted the video dials painstakingly.

Volume 2 of the Science Fiction Hall of Fame is Novellas. There were 24 in total, but 22 are included in the volume. Beause this made it such a large collection, volume 2 was split with 2B (confusingly called 'Volume Three' in a 1974 edition) containing:
"The Martian Way" by Isaac Asimov
"Earthman, Come Home" by James Blish
"Rogue Moon" by Algis Budrys
"The Specter General" by Theodore R. Cogswell
"The Machine Stops" by E. M. Forster
"The Midas Plague" by Frederik Pohl
"The Witches of Karres by James H. Schmitz
"E for Effort" by T. L. Sherred
