Great collection of poems to help students see other parts of the world through literature. I really liked this collection of poems from around the world for two reasons. The first reason I like this collection is due to the diversity of poems provided. With many of the poems being traditional to a region or free verse, readers are privy to new ideas and fresh imaginative feelings. For example, the poem “A Spell for Catching A Bearded Seal” a traditional Inuit poem goes “What smell do I smell of? Of the smell of a bearded seal. The smell of earth and clay.” With unknown concepts, for many readers, presented in this poem, the words open a door for discussion and research. And the culture opens another door for discovery. I also really like the illustrations that accompany the poems. Each poem has an illustration that helps the readers create a deeper connection with each poem. One illustration depicts the poem “Pinda Cake,” a traditional Jamaican poem. Showing lots of young Jamaican children having fun, the illustration allows readers to experience the rich colors often associated with Jamaica and envision the types of people who live there. The main purpose of this book is to present readers with a global experience with poetry. A truly wonderful collection of poetry. From the Arctic Circle to England stopping through Guyana, Argentina, Kenya, Pakistan, Thailand and more readers get a view of the whole word through poetry. Each poem takes the reader to another place and another culture. The poems range from voices of joy, saddness, serious, and funny. The pictures just add another element to the poems by giving the reader a visual of the place the poem is transporting them too. Would be a great resource if doing a study around the world. Children could be taken on a literary trip around the world. This book could be used as a sole focus on poetry and the world or as an interdisciplinary study through social studies or geography. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
