The first in a nail-shredding new crime series. On a remote Highland mountain, the body of Elaine Buxton is burning. All that will be left to identify the respected lawyer are her teeth and a fragment of clothing. In the concealed back room of a house in Edinburgh, the real Elaine Buxton screams into the darkness. Detective Inspector Beau Callanach has barely set foot in his new office when Elaine's missing persons case is escalated to a murder investigation. Having left behind a promising career at Interpol, he's eager to prove himself to his new team. But Edinburgh, he discovers, is a long way from Lyon, and Elaine's killer has covered his tracks with meticulous care. It's not long before another successful woman is abducted from her doorstep, and Callanach finds himself in a race against the clock. Or so he believes ...The real fate of the women will prove more twisted than he could have ever imagined.… (plus d'informations)

Geleend van de bibliotheek om weer eens een detective-je te lezen. Het is er halverwege bij gebleven. Misschien zijn dit soort boeken beter te verwerken in vakantietijd. ( )

This debut novel shows that Fields has a remarkable ability for writing grit lit, tartan noir, or whatever you choose to call it. This is the first in a series featuring DI Luc Callanach, a Scottish-born French detective whose mother removed him from Scotland at four years old when they moved to France. He was a one-time model, then most recently employed by Interpol. He is now a DI in Scotland's police service in Edinburgh working with another officer, DCI Ava Turner, where they are investigating a case of missing women and a second case of abandoned new born babies. The missing women crime is gripping, gruesome, somewhat reminiscent of Jussi Adler-Olsen's noir novels. It kept me up until 3am because I couldn’t put it down. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and look forward to following the series. ( )

Good writing, interesting characters and very, very gruesome. ( )

This debut novel of the series features DI Luc Callanach and his team. Luc is new to the area and new to the job. The first hurdle he encounters is one that he can do absolutely nothing about. The fact that he’s half French and half Scottish does nothing to endear him and it seems that everyone on his team is holding that against him. He is eager to prove himself to his new team...but that also meets resistance. He has barely had a chance to settle into his new office when a missing person's case suddenly becomes a homicide... and, ready or not, the game is on. Luc is an absolutely terrific character. We learn so much about him when the author blends his professional life with his personal life and we learn the things that brought him to where he is now. If you like Angela Marston’s books...you will soon become an equal fan of Helen Fields ( )
