D.I. Kim Stone and her team investigate the death of a social worker during an apparent robbery. But then another victim is discovered with an identical stab wound to the heart, and Kim fears that a serial killer is on the loose. Meanwhile, Kim's sociopathic nemesis, Dr. Alex Thorne, is up to her old manipulative tricks again in prison - will she finally succeed in destroying Kim's fragile psyche?

Kim is an intelligent and resourceful heroine, but it is difficult to watch her struggle with Alex's machinations. Nevertheless, it is satisfying to see her ultimately get the better of the obnoxious Alex.

The mystery is compelling and the motive, once revealed, is disturbing. That said, it is difficult to accept that Kim figured it all out with the dearth of available clues.

In sum, another excellent installment in the series and I look forward to continuing. ( )

Molto bello, ottima conseguenza de “Il gioco del male”, un thriller che riporta in primo piano uno dei personaggi più inquietanti con cui ha avuto a che fare la detective Stone.

This is probably my favorite of the series so far. There was a lot going on, with two major stories that were not connected, plus some background on Kim's mother and why Kim hates her so much. I was a little put off in some ways about that, as her mother was obvious nutty as a fruitcake, and although she did some really bad things, she was not totally in control. I felt she should be locked up, but not hated. But then, if I had gone through the experience Kim did, I might feel differently.

The most interesting story was the evil psychologist from the past that is a psychopath and enjoys destroying the lives of the vulnerable. She's in prison, but is smart and manipulative, and can probably get out if she puts her mind to it. And when she does, she has Kim in her sights as the one most likely to destroy.

There was some good interaction between Kim and her team, which is getting more interesting as I get to know them. Looking forward to more of this series. ( )

The last book in the series, Play Dead, was fabulous, a truly thrilling an engrossing book. This one did I have a harder time with. For one thing, did it take some days with me reading around 20% every time, not really getting into the story, but still liking the characters enough to wanting to read the book.

But, I do think the biggest issue is that the return of Dr. Alex Thorne just didn't do the trick for me, sure she was an interesting character in Evil Games (book 2), but I found the vendetta against Kim to be a tad annoying. That said, the story was not bad, the case with the murders that Kim and her colleagues tried to solve was baffling and as the book progressed even the storyline with Alex Thorne got better. Then, we have the last part of the book, that's when the book truly became engrossing and thrilling to read, and thanks to that the rating of the book went from an OK 3-star book to a really good 4-star book instead and now I'm craving book 6!

Blood Lines started off slow for me, grew better as the story progressed and ended on a high note. I quite like this series, Detective Kim Stone has become a favorite character of mine, a woman that has overcome a miserable childhood and have some issues (quite a lot to be honest), but she's a tough cookie!

On a side note; I did miss Daniel Bate. I hope to see him in a coming book!
