"Mississippi. 1966. On a hot June afternoon an African-American man named James Meredith set out to walk through his home state, intending to fight racism and fear with his feet. A seemingly simple plan, but one teeming with risk. Just one day later Meredith was shot and wounded in a roadside ambush. Within twenty-four hours, Martin Luther King, Jr., Stokely Carmichael, and other civil rights leaders had taken up Meredith's cause, determined to overcome this violent act and complete Meredith's walk. The stakes were high--there was no time for advance planning and their route cut through dangerous territory. No one knew if they would succeed. By many measures the March Against Fear became one of the greatest protests of the civil rights era. But it was also one of the last, and the campaign has been largely forgotten. Critically acclaimed author Ann Bausum brings this crucial turning point of civil rights history back to life, escorting you along the dusty Mississippi roads where heroic marchers endured violence, rage, and fear as they walked more than 200 miles in the name of equality and justice."--Provided by publisher.… (plus d'informations)

Bausum presents this ugly time in US history in a very uncomplicated way. Her language is not creative or catchy, but someone the simple way she writes touches the reader as a both scholar and as a human being. ( )

"Narrator Karen Chilton echoes the determination of Civil Rights activists in Mississippi's often overlooked but hugely influential March against Fear in 1966." I am not permitted to reprint my review for AudioFile Magazine in full, however, a link to it appears below. The March Against Fear: The Last Great Walk of the Civil Rights Movement and the Emergence of Black Power, details James Meredith's original purpose for the march, the changes that occurred after he was shot, and the aftereffects of the march, which are still being felt to this day. Additionally, it is a behind-the-scenes look at the sometimes competitive motivations of Civil Rights leaders, James Meredith, Stokely Carmichael, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Although this is a piece of American history more than 50 years old, it is informative and relevant to the current racial situation in the United States. The audiobook version earned an AudioFile Earphones Award.

Summary: This book retells the story of one of the most impactful civil rights demonstrations of the era. James Meredith’s march is retold alongside striking photographs. This book should be a must read for young children.

Personal Reflection: I was excited to come across this book. I feel like James Meredith’s story is one that gets, at best, glossed over in history books.

Extension #1: Students can write a paper on the importance of the march.

Extensions #2: Students can explore their personal feelings by writing poetry or prose in regards to what the march means to them.
