This book is full of fun, adventure, magic, and a dragon. I picked it up from a list of feminist books for kids and it does hold up, with strong, brave characters who learn to think for themselves and are willing to question authority for the good of the whole city. (

Great book, especially starting at the half-way point. First half is a little slow, but it builds up the dour environment and establishes the stakes well. Chantel is a great character. (

children's middlegrade fantasy (4th grade and up) diversity note: main character has brown skin but doesn't necessarily identify with any specific culture).
cute adventure with dragons and magic and old grumpy men who don't listen.

I missed reading this book last year and used it as a delightfully tasty pallette cleanser at bedtime after a week of assigned reading. I handed it straight to my 14yo before I had to return it to the library. He loved it too, proving that a good book exceeds age range. So fun!
We're both psyched to start the Jinx series now. Good thing it's a short school week. :)
