Among the late writer's possessions are stacks of magazines hidden in an attic that suggest that his stories about his world travels were less than authentic. In a witty mystery that simultaneously follows the lives of the father and son, clues that Chester leaves behind point to notorious unsolved crimes committed within a fifteen-year span: The D. B. Loved it! Well written and crafted. ( )

Leland's father dies in a car crash, and leaves a mystery of his life. Leland tries to piece together his father's life, and sort through what really happened, and how the family got so wealthy.

This book had a lot of flipping through the past and present, with Leland and his father. You learn about D.B. Cooper and a gold cross, and more heists. It is an interesting and mellow book. There are no shootouts or violence. A nice book. ( )

With Big Flies, you get two stories in one. The Before and After in a combined “meanwhile, back at the ranch” style that is both entertaining and helps move the stories along. Leland is trying to deal with the gaps in his father’s past while wondering how he could have been so oblivious. But he’s catching on fast and the more he discovers, the more exciting the tale. Could his good fortune really have come from such ill-gotten gains? And if it were you, would you feel guilty? This is a well-paced, free-flowing read with switchbacks and surprises a’plenty. Hirshland has created some fascinating characters here.

An advanced copy of this book was provided for an honest review. ( )
