In the early nineteenth-century, young watercolourist Bianca is commissioned to illustrate all the plants in the extensive grounds of a grand villa on the outskirts of Milan in Italy. Her employer is the eccentric poet Don Titta who is part of the first stirrings of the unification of Italy. Recently orphaned, Bianca is soon accepted into Titta's family which includes his delicate wife, five children, and his dominating mother. But her place within the household is uncertain, she is neither servant nor family. Biana soon discovers there are secrets within the household and sets out to answer her many questions.
