Digger was aanvankelijk terughoudend om mee te doen als de onwettige zoon van de politiecommissaris en een vrouw die tijdens een demonstratie door de politie werd vermoord, maar de verleiding om erachter te komen wat er echt met zijn moeder was gebeurd, bracht hem ertoe deze baan aan te nemen. De hoofdinspecteur Chilman geeft hem af en toe een hint over zijn moeder, maar deze was vooral geobsedeerd door een onopgeloste zaak van hemzelf - een jonge man genaamd Nathan, wiens verdwijning nooit opgelost was.Terwijl Digger steeds meer groeit in zijn rol als detective, begint hij aanwijzingen te vinden voor beide misdaden. Het verhaal sprak me vooral aan door het gevoel voor de plaats en de cultuur. Het boek werd aangekondigd als het eerste boek in een kwartet, waarvan er nu twee in het Engels verschenen zijn. Michael 'Digger' Digson is recruited by Detective Superintendent Chilman for a newly formed police force. Digger has his own agenda, however, as he wants to find out what happened to his mother. He is an illegitimate child and his biological father is the chief of police of the Caribbean island of Camaho.
It soon becomes clear that the women and girls on the island are oppressed and abused and that only a few of them fight back, but have to pay for it with their lives. The men always get away scot-free. Digger wants to take action against this, but it's not that easy. With the help of Chilman's daughter Miss Stanislaus, a secretary at the police station and DS Chilman's backing, he manages to solve the cases.
Very excitingly written with lots of insight knowledge about a world that is foreign to me. (
