Fiction. Mystery. Suspense. Thriller. HTML:Hannah Smith returns in the stunning new adventure in the New York Times??bestselling series by the author of the Doc Ford novels.

A fishing guide and part-time investigator, Hannah Smith is a tall, strong Florida woman descended from many generations of the same. But the problem before her now is much older even than that.
Five hundred years ago, Spanish conquistadors planted the first orange seeds in Florida, but now the whole industry is in trouble. The trees are dying at the root, weakened by infestation and genetic manipulation, and the only solution might be somehow, somewhere, to find samples of the original root stock. This was another good one from Randy Wayne White. He is such a good writer, and I enjoyed the story while it was on a more or less straight trajectory. (The whole orange / biotech thing was superb.) But then it got way too convoluted. Both Hannah Smith and the bad "guys" ended up having to do a myriad of dumb and dangerous things to make it work so Hannah could end up in isolated and deadly places. That's where I lost some enthusiasm. Sure, it made the book more nail-biting and thriller-like, but also added a lot more than its fair share of dumb.

I feel like I have read a ton of RWW by now, but this may be my first in the Hannah Smith series. And because RWW is such a fine writer I was surprised when Hannah was using the exact same voice as Marion "Doc" Ford; way too similar and I would say an oversight on the part of the author. Still, a good, fast read. ( )

Entertaining with a message. This is the fourth Randy Wayne White novel featuring charter captain Hannah Smith. Covers some current topics of citrus greening disease & invasive species in Florida. ( )

This is the first of the Hannah Smith novels I have read. The beginning was a bit farcical, but I enjoyed the story and learning about the characters. Living in SW Florida, I particularly appreciated the history, biology, and insight into problems in our area relating to the citrus industry and our well known issues with pythons. If you are a fan of Randy Wayne White, or SW Florida, don't miss it. If you haven't read White before and are looking for a light, quick read in which you will learn a bit about the area, read this book.

It's not often that the bad guy turns out to be botanical, but in the latest Hannah Smith mystery (following Haunted, 2014), citrus greening disease is at the root of the fishing guide's problems. Well, that and the fact that Florida's former lieutenant governor just died in Hannah's mother's bed. When Hannah meets the man who had been hired to manage the lieutenant governor's orange groves, sparks fly. Kermit Bigalow is unhappily married and makes no secret of his attraction to Hannah. She struggles to keep their relationship platonic (there are still unresolved relationship issues between Hannah and Doc Ford, star of White's other Sanibel Island-set series) as she takes Bigalow deep into the Everglades to find some centuries-old trees whose immunity to disease may be the key to saving the state's citrus crops. Fans of mysteries that show an appreciation of the great outdoors will love this gun-toting, plane-flying, boat-living heroine.--Keefe, Karen Copyright 2016 Booklist
