I am new to this author, but won’t be a stranger for long, this is easily one oft he best books I will read all year. The first paragraph sucks you in and then hang on for a non stop, pulse pounding ride. Matthew Connor is an archaeologist. He and his closest friends Robyn, the curator of a major metropolitan museum and Cal, a travel photographer, make up a treasure hunting team, the likes of which would make Indiana Jones proud. Like Indy, Matt has a nemesis who doesn’t mind playing dirty to get the goods. When Cal’s girlfriend Sophie is kidnapped in order to retrieve an artifact the team had found, the team must make a trek into the South American Jungle to find the fabled Incan lost City of Gold to use as leverage to get her back.

The first thing that struck me about this story was how it appeals to the five senses. I could feel bullets whipping by and hear the splintering of the trees. I could smell the perfumed guests at the party. I was trapped in underground tunnels and felt my heart bursting for air while under feet of water. This was an interactive reading experience. The characters are brought to a life-like status. Each carries his or his her own emotional attachment for the readers and none are unimportant. One would expect Matt and his team to carry the story with their adventures, with tagalong bad guys, into the jungle and underground caves with all the inherent dangers and traps along away the way, and they do. However, just as much is taking place back in Toronto where police and Matt’s team are closing in on their investigation of Sophie’s disappearance. There wasn’t a dull moment in this book. I highly recommend this high octane thriller.

An easy read, but oh boy, is the plot stupid. Without spoiling it for you, the gist is as follows: an exploration party led by "non-materialstic" rich boy archeologist Mathew Connor can prevent a further escalation of a serious crime and possibly save a life, if only they can find the lost Incan city of gold and deliver all its treasures to the criminals.

The reasoning why this is so made absolutely zero sense to me and spoiled much of what would have otherwise been an enjoyable archeology-themed action thriller, albeit with stereotypical characters. These include an Indiana Jones-like main hero with daddy approval issues, a bad-ass female sidekick, who, obviously, is the principal romantic interest of the hero, but unfortunately and also obviously, they work better together as friends, and, hilariously traditional and transparent bad guys.

In fact, now that I think of it, three stars is a rather generous rating. ( )

I love treasure hunting and am very excited to travel to South America to search for the Lost City of Gold with Carolyn Arnold.

Matthew was the reason Cal was the Indiana Jones type, a modern day treasure hunter. An adrenaline junkie and thrill seeker. Danger is part of his game.

Matthew, and his friends, Cal and Robyn…could danger have followed them home?

Sophie has ‘feelings’ and they are not good ones.

Have you heard of the Lost City of Gold? Carolyn Arnold made me curious enough, I had to Google Patiti, Bolivia and El Dorado. Check it out for yourself.

Due to circumstances beyond their control, their journey is thrown together, with less research and planning than the other adventures they had been on.

Danger looms from more than the jungle.

She came from his past and all their lives are on the line.

A cross between Indiana Jones and the Lost World, without the dinosaurs, add a kidnapping, and a lot of action and adventure in the jungle and I find it impossible to go wrong with City of Gold by Carolyn Arnold. I loved the book and I am super excited to have my hands on the next adventure in the series, The Secret of the Last Pharoah.

This book has everything, kidnap, murder, police investigation and the hunt for lost treasure. A real page turner full of thrills and emotion with excellent descriptive writing and characters that jump out of the pages and come to life.

The story takes us on a rip roaring roller coaster of a ride through the jungle to find a hidden city of gold in order to save his girlfriend from a kidnapper. A lot of research has obviously gone into this novel, I feel the story is a cross between the Indiana Jones stories and the old Tarzan adventures with a mythological creature and old fashioned defence mechanisms thrown in.

The chapters are small and the story flows smoothly. I think each reader will pick out their favourite character and will want them to succeed.

A riveting read for all adventures lovers who have an interest in history. I enjoyed this book along with the authors other novels and anyone who likes adventure mystery and suspense will enjoy it too. ( )
