Note: I accessed a digital review copy of this book through Edelweiss. Mayor Moe, an orange-coloured fathead with the chin of Donald Trump, repeatedly tramples on the rights of local citizens by putting his own desires first and has to be berated back into line by the rest of the city council, mostly Councillor Bug (who looks like a cross between a helicopter and Fred Flintstone's little green alien) and her shrieks of, "That's not fair!" At the end of each tale, there are discussion questions about the specific right that was trampled. While the content is not terribly clever and the illustrations rather cutesy, the is a useful vehicle to launch discussions not only about civic rights, but also about democracy and the people we choose to represent us. Thank you to Kids Can Press for the free review copy. I got this review copy from Netgalley. This book is a great introduction to basic rights and freedoms, and questioning things in a democracy. I love Counsellor Bug - she speaks her mind! These stories are basic, but nuanced enough that you could have a good discussion about them afterwards. This book makes me want to have a discussion about politics with some children now! The monsters have great designs, and the illustrations are adorable. Explore the rights and freedoms of citizens in a democracy through a series of six short stories starring Mayor Moe and the councilors of an imaginary city. In each story, there is a problem or concern that the council and/or Mayor Moe think they can fix by passing a law. Unfortunately, there is usually fallout from the law that they did not consider. At the end of each story there three discussion questions that encourage critical thinking. The topics covered in this book include religious freedom, unreasonable search, safety regulations, freedom of the press, peaceful protest and equal opportunity. For ages 7 - 11 years.
