Christy Brown was born a victim of cerebral palsy. But the hapless, lolling baby concealed the brilliantly imaginative and sensitive mind of a writer who would take his place among the giants of Irish literature. This is Christy Brown's own story. He recounts his childhood struggle to learn to read, write, paint and finally type, with the toe of his left foot. In this manner he wrote his bestseller Down all the Days. A child is born with severe cerebral palsy to a poor family in Ireland in the 1930s. The child has extremely limited physical movements and control. But the family are supportive and the child is included in family activities - even if his siblings need to carry him around on a jury-rigged cart.
Against the odds, the child thrives. The only part of his body that the boy can control is his left foot - hence the title. He learns how to draw with chalk and pencils etc using his left foot. Gradually, he acquires writing skills. He grows mentally, and manages to assert his personality and intellect, inspite of the physical limitations.
A powerful book that should be more widely read. ( )
