History. Juvenile Nonfiction. On October 29, 1929, life in the United States took a turn for the worst. The stock market – the system that controls money in America – plunged to a record low. But this event was only the beginning of many bad years to come. By the early 1930s, one out of three people was not working. People lost their jobs, their houses, or both and ended up in shantytowns called “Hoovervilles” named for the president at the time of the crash. By 1933, many banks had gone under. Though the U.S. has seen other times of struggle, the Great Depression remains one of the hardest and most widespread tragedies in American history. Now it is represented clearly and with 80 illustrations in our What Was…? series.… (plus d'informations)

This book is a very simplified, easy-to-follow guide about a very important era in U.S. history. There are pictures to supplement the text throughout, but since it is so simplified, the book doesn't clarify many perspectives from the era outside of white family struggles. Though, it does mention new establishments and some legislation that came about. Timelines at the end of the book also help to seal the dates that the era lasted. ( )

I thought this informal text book was quite good. The first thing I liked was that it included separate boxed pages to clarify terms and explain important figures of the time period. For example of page 8 it explains what prohibition was, "In 1920, the United States government made it illegal to sell alcoholic drinks." Other examples are describing Wall Street on page 12 and FDR on page 66. I also like that the book included 16 photographs at the end to show what life was really like. One photograph is "Dorothea Lange's famous photo of a migrant mother." Overall this book explains the troubling times known as the Great Depression and makes it understandable to the younger generations. ( )

This is a simple explanation of a complex period in US history. It would be easily understood by 3rd through 6th graders, however it is not an ethnically diverse telling. There is one reference to African Americans being hit harder than whites, but other than that there is no mention of the other immigrant cultures impacted. It does give a fairly thorough account of the more important public systems established. I would use this book as a lit circle choice or to supplement a Depression unit corresponding with Social Studies.
