Jock Sturges' photos of nude adolescents ( mainly women ) and their families are beautiful and I would say worshipful of budding womanhood. They are not erotic, sexy, exploitive or objectifying but simply beautiful. If you have the opportunity, you should at least browse through one at a library or bookstore. I borrowed them from UVA, my local university library. (

Ongeveer een jaar geleden zag ik een deel van een documentaire over het werk van Jock Sturges, een mij tot dan toe onbekende fotograaf. Ik begreep dat hij omstreden was in de Verenigde Staten en meestal jonge mensen naakt fotografeerde. Zijn foto's spraken me erg aan. Later zag ik een prachtige afdruk van een van zijn foto's in een fotowinkel in Utrecht. Omdat ook de recensies op internet zeer lovend waren heb ik 4 van zijn boeken gekocht.
"The last day of summer" is het eerste boek van Jock Sturges. Jock Sturges maakt ieder jaar gedurende de zomer foto's van (veelal) naakte jonge mensen op de naturistencampings waar hij dan is. Veel van zijn modellen heeft hij jarenlang gefotografeerd. Hij gebruikt een groot formaat camera (8 bij 10 cm negatieven) zodat zijn foto's haarscherp en haast zonder korrel zijn. Technisch zijn de foto's een genot om naar te kijken. Ik denk dat de foto's op groot formaat afgedrukt nog beter tot hun recht komen dan in een boek.
Dan de foto's zelf. Toegegeven er staan een paar prachtige foto's in het boek (waaronder de omslagfoto), maar de meeste foto's vind ik niet zo bijzonder. (
