St. Anne's is a hospital being run out of an old stately home in Shropshire. The war is on, and this location is perfect for a convalescent home for men and women who have suffered severe physical disfigurement or psychological trauma. However, a shocking murder of a father and son on the premises shatters the tranquility and results in DI Tom Tyler being sent to investigate.
I have greatly enjoyed the Tom Tyler series, not least because of the atmosphere of WW2 Britain. This is Britain on the home front: rationing, the intermittent threats of raids, and the effects of the war on those who have been left behind. It's an interesting perspective. There are some links to previous books in the series, so certain characters may prompt head-scratching if you've forgotten who they are, but the text will bring you up to speed eventually. ( )
