Fiction. Literature. Mystery. Romance. HTML:

When Lila Moore inherits her grandfather's house, she finds herself in a small Midwestern town where margarine is never an acceptable substitution for butter, a coveted family recipe can serve as currency, and the friend who will take your darkest secrets to the grave will still never give you the secret to her prize-winning begonias.
Lila is charmed by the people of Auburn, from the blue-eyed lawyer with the southern drawl to the little old lady who unceasingly tries to set Lila up with her grandson. But when strange things begin to happen, Lila realizes some of her new friends are guarding a secret like its a precious family heirloom. It's a dangerous secret, and it has come back to haunt them. Lila is caught in the middle, and her life may depend on uncovering it. But even if she can, can she stay in Auburn when not everyone is what they seem, and even the house wants her gone?

This was a pleasant surprise.

Basically this is about a girl who moves to a small town and inherits an old house. As she is trying to fix it up, crazy stuff happens. There are two guys. And a lot of twists (some predictable and some not).

The author did a great job with the characterization of everyone except Max. I felt like his personality was all over the place. One minute he was happy, the next he was smirking, and then awkward. It just wasn't natural the way his moods changed. Over than that, I loved the charm of the older ladies.
And the romance was cute.

The mystery was pretty intriguing and I enjoyed learning about Lila fixing up the old house.

I will definitely read the next one. ( )

This book had a clever set up, an interesting mystery, fun characters and downplayed romance. I rather enjoyed it. Tried to move on to book two but it didn't live up to this one. ( )

This was not for me. Slow, meandering, and inconsistent. And then there's the ending, I just didn't like it. It read like the author had a mishmash of ideas and just kind of threw them together regardless to plot or theme constancy. ( )

I wasn't sure what I was getting into with this book and had no idea what to expect. The story started off with Lila planning the funeral for her Grandpa with the help of her Aunt Ada. Lila learns she has inherited her grandfather's house but quickly comes to discover that the old house holds more than a large array of repairs. During her time there, Lila meets a smarmy young attorney and a single father trying to find his way after a divorce. Old mysteries come back to haunt Lila and her family and one has to wonder if it is ever going to stop.

I enjoyed the story but felt there were some consistency issues and the plot fell out in some places. If the author had paid a little closer attention to these little issues, the story really could have been something amazing. It should be noted that I will be reading other Obituary Society books as I feel the author still has quite the story to tell. ( )
