Een leeg huis, translated as An Empty House is another novel by the Dutch writer Marga Minco. Written and published after the Second World War, it describes how two young women cope with life after the war. During the last part of the war, the two Jewish girls, Sepha and Yona, were in hiding in the north of the Netherlands, and the first episode of the story is about their return to Amsterdam.

The idea is that they would be going home, but in Amsterdam they find many empty houses. Sepha moves in with her boyfriend, while Yona has no place to go. The story mainly follows the life of Sepha in three episodes, each moments in time. Yona also appears in each episode.

In each episode, Sepha is on the move. She cannot really settle anywhere, nor can she really settle with Mark. She has a place to stay, a house, but no home. She seems happy to follow her impulses. Yona is less fortunate. An unlucky fall into a canal during the first episode, has an eery echo with her fall out of a train, in the last episode. These two cases of falling leave you wondering whether they happened with intent or were they accidental.

The idea of "falling" as a motive and a link to coincidence and misfortune also plays an important role in Minco's novella De val. ( )

La guerra è finita. Chi si è salvato dallo sterminio lascia i nascondigli dove si sono consumati i giorni della paura e intraprende il cammino per tornare a casa. Ma della casa resta solo la grande facciata. Dietro: il nulla, soltanto macerie. E quella facciata è il simbolo di chi è sopravvissuto all'odio e alle persecuzioni ma nella cui anima è stata distrutta la fiducia nella vita e nell'uomo. In questo breve romanzo, Marga Minco, con quella sensibilità che già conoscevamo, ci narra magistralmente il difficile ritorno alla vita di alcuni scampati. Er worden drie dagen uit het leven van Sepha beschreven, in 1945, 1947, 1950. Zij heeft in de tweede wereldoorlog ondergedoken geleefd op verschillende plaatsen in Amsterdam. Na een maand in Friesland te zijn verbleven om aan te sterken, ontmoet zij in juni 1945 tijdens het liften naar huis Yona die hetzelfde lot heeft ondergaan. Sepha trouwt met haar vriend Mark , een verzetsstrijder die zij op haar onderduikadres ontmoet heeft. Ze vertrekt in 1947 een tijd naar een vissersdorpje in Zuid- Frankrijk, waar Mark haar bezoekt. Het huwelijk heeft vele ups en downs, beiden hebben relaties met anderen. In april 1950 komt een depressieve Yona bij haar langs, Sepha heeft niet veel tijd , want zij moet naar het nieuwe huis gaan dat zij en Mark gekocht hebben. Yona vertrekt teleurgesteld. ‘s Avonds vertelt Mark haar, dat Yona die dag uit de trein is gevallen en dodelijk verongelukt is. Sepha vraagt zich af wat er was gebeurd, als ze haar een kans had gegeven te zeggen wat ze wilde zeggen.
Het boek gaat over het verwerken van oorlogservaringen, de een kan er wel mee leven en de ander niet. Je valt van het heden opeens in een flashback, dat is soms verwarrend, verder leest het verhaal wel gemakkelijk. ( )
