Traces how the human image of the world has changed throughout history, demonstrating the evolution of the idea of reality while touching on subjects ranging from the Higgs boson to quantum gravity. "A closer look at the mind-bending nature of the universe. What are the elementary ingredients of the world? Do time and space exist? And what exactly is reality? Theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli has spent his life exploring these questions. He tells us how our understanding of reality has changed over the centuries and how physicists think about the structure of the universe today. In elegant and accessible prose, Rovelli takes us on a wondrous journey from Democritus to Albert Einstein, from Michael Faraday to gravitational waves, and from classical physics to his own work in quantum gravity. As he shows us how the idea of reality has evolved over time, Rovelli offers deeper explanations of the theories he introduced so concisely in Seven Brief Lessons on Physics. This book culminates in a lucid overview of quantum gravity, the field of research that explores the quantum nature of space and time, seeking to unify quantum mechanics and general relativity. Rovelli invites us to imagine a marvelous world where space breaks up into tiny grains, time disappears at the smallest scales, and black holes are waiting to explode--a vast universe still largely undiscovered."--Dust jacket.… (plus d'informations)

This books makes me wish for exposure to such profound scientific history and concepts during my school years, or at least, paying closer attention to the subject matter.

Through accessible prose, this book guides you through the evolution of human understanding- weaving history and science seamlessly.

For those who missed out on science education like I did, this book offers a profound opportunity to learn and reflect.
Rovelli's work is a must-read for anyone curious about the universe and our place within it. ( )

A wonderful book that makes you think. Some example quotes that make sense by the end of the book:

Putting a limit to infinity is a recurrent theme in modern physics

... it is not necessary to use the notion of time to describe physics. It is better to forget time altogether.

... reality is not made up of discrete objects. It is a variable flux.

As humans, we are that which others know of us, that which we know of ourselves, and which others know about our knowledge. We are complex nodes in a rich web of reciprocal knowledge.

Clarifying perspectives on physics. Newtonian physics becomes intuitive. Post Einsteinian physics has much hard to integrate into poor experience of the world we encounter. One interesting insight the author offers OSS that it is heat that gives times arrow its direction. ( )

Would have given 3 stars, but most of the book went over my head. ( )

A beautifully told history of physics. My knowledge of physics is minimal so this book was outside my comfort zone and I learnt a lot but this got too deep for me. I do however appreciate the beautiful storytelling and the abundance of information. 3.5/5 ( )
