"For its darkness and its glee, I loved this novel."  --Robin Sloan, author ofMr. Penumbra's 24-Hour BookstoreA high school music festival goes awry when a young prodigy disappears from the most infamous room in the Bellweather Hotel, in a whip-smart novel sparkling with dark and giddy humorFifteen years ago, a murder-suicide in room 712 rocked the grand old Bellweather Hotel and the young bridesmaid who witnessed it, Minnie Graves. Now hundreds of high school musicians, including quiet bassoonist Rabbit Hatmaker and his brassy diva twin, Alice, have gathered in its cavernous, crumbling halls for the annual Statewide festival; Minnie has returned to face her demons; and a colossal snowstorm is threatening to trap them all in the hotel. Then Alice's roommate goes missing--from room 712. The search for her entwines an eccentric cast of characters: conductors and caretakers, failures and stars, teenagers on the verge and adults trapped in memories. For everyone has come to the Bellweather with a secret, and everyone is haunted.Bellweather Rhapsody is a genre-bending page-turner, full of knowing nods to pop culture classics fromThe Shining to Agatha Christie toGlee. But its pleasures are beautifully deepened by Kate Racculia's skill with her characters, her melancholy, affecting writing about music, and her fearlessness about the loss and darkness that underline the truest humor. This is a wholly winning new novel from a writer to watch.… (plus d'informations)

Reading this book was an eerie experience for me, because I recognized the setting from the blurb. I went to this same festival, at the same creepy hotel, about ten years earlier than the author did. No murders, when I was there; but it was definitely a Thing.

In real life, it was the Concord Resort Hotel, fading sibling of Grossingers (you know Grossingers as the inspiration for the hotel resort in "Dirty Dancing"). I remember rehearsing in a giant ballroom under a dim chandelier. One of the boys in the group "picked" a few glass crystals from the chandelier and gave them out to girls. I kept that crystal in my window for years until it fell one day and shattered while I was studying.

A total page-turner -- in fact, I stayed up so late reading it that, about halfway in, I had to skip to the end, so I could know how it came out and could go to sleep. Came back the next day and finished reading the middle part, and it was just as much fun even though I knew the end. Now I'm curious to read more of this writer's work -- this felt like a first book, a little bit explain-y and backstory-y. But that doesn't mar the fun plot and the evocative descriptions. ( )

This mystery (and more) was a craftily layered treat. Read my full review here. ( )

Fifteen years ago, an infamous crime took place at the Bellweather Hotel; now, it’s time for the 1997 Statewide Music Festival. But when a star flautist goes missing, is it a joke or something nefarious? This quirky novel infuses humor and music with mystery.
