If you don't really really like Jack Kerouac, then you won't like this. I really cannot believe that this has such good reviews on Amazon. It was a clichéd plot that crawled through pseudo-profound drivel.

I was surprised at how unoriginal this was from someone who teaches other people how to write.
I finished the whole thing holding out hope for a flash of even glimmer of insight or brilliance, but was disappointed.

Try it if you like, but I you don't like the first chapter, and I mean *really* like it, then save your time and quit while you can because it doesn't get much better. ( )

An incredibly in depth book with a deceptively simple premise of a road trip. Chock full of life lessons, and soul searching it's a good read. My sole complaint is how much the author/narrator jumps between the present/past memories/future memories. It got confusing and muddled at some points, and in general seemed a messy way of telling the story. Near the end the formula was obvious, start the chapter with a bit of the present and use that to lead to a past or future memory which would then lead to another past or future memory and then end chapter, or bookend with the present.

But again, it is a good read, and deals with the ideas of fathers and their impact on their sons as well as life and where we're going. ( )
