In the best tradition of the great American memoir, Any Road Will Take You There is honest, unflinching, and tender. A middle-aged father takes the reader on a 5000-mile road trip, the one he always wished he'd taken as a young man. Recently divorced and uncertain of the future, he re-reads the iconic road story -- Jack Keroauc's On the Road -- and along with his two sons and his best friend, heads for the highway to rekindle a new level of inspiration. However, a family secret turns the cross-country journey into an unexpected examination of his role as a father, and compels him to look to the past and the fathers who came before him to find contentment and clarity, and celebrate the struggles and triumphs of being a dad.… (plus d'informations)

If you don't really really like Jack Kerouac, then you won't like this. I really cannot believe that this has such good reviews on Amazon. It was a clichéd plot that crawled through pseudo-profound drivel.

I was surprised at how unoriginal this was from someone who teaches other people how to write.
I finished the whole thing holding out hope for a flash of even glimmer of insight or brilliance, but was disappointed.

Try it if you like, but I you don't like the first chapter, and I mean *really* like it, then save your time and quit while you can because it doesn't get much better. ( )

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

An incredibly in depth book with a deceptively simple premise of a road trip. Chock full of life lessons, and soul searching it's a good read. My sole complaint is how much the author/narrator jumps between the present/past memories/future memories. It got confusing and muddled at some points, and in general seemed a messy way of telling the story. Near the end the formula was obvious, start the chapter with a bit of the present and use that to lead to a past or future memory which would then lead to another past or future memory and then end chapter, or bookend with the present.

But again, it is a good read, and deals with the ideas of fathers and their impact on their sons as well as life and where we're going. ( )

"Berner's memories and stories about his father, his sons, his failings and successes, and how the journey is the most telling and important piece of our lives may just inspire you to take a trip of your own."
