I liked the combination of individual stories in the context of the larger history. ( ) This books is a "what was" book and for an Informational book the author did a very good job of making it interesting and adding in voice. Reading about the underground railroad out of a text book can be very hard for kids because of the concept and terminology, but new terms were defined in the book along with easy to follow chapters that focuses on a particular person or certain time. I learned a lot of information in this book and am now intrigued to see other books of this series. Like the "who was.." books, this is about an event in America, not a specific person. I remember learning about the Underground Railroad in Elementary school and I remembered it being a big deal. So I assume that when I start teaching, I will end up at one point teaching about the Underground Railroad and I would love to have this book to use. I would teach the history of slaves, which is a sensitive subject, but we have to teach history in order for it not to repeat itself. I would teach them about slaves and how hard they struggled for their freedom, and they could not just run away or escape, they would be severely punished. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

"No one knows where the term Underground Railroad came from--there were no trains or tracks, only "conductors" who helped escaping slaves to freedom. Including real stories about "passengers" on the "Railroad," this book chronicles slaves' close calls with bounty hunters, exhausting struggles on the road, and what they sacrificed for freedom. With black-and-white illustrations throughout and a sixteen-page black-and-white photo insert, the Underground Railroad comes alive!"-- Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
