Sheriff Joanna Brady must solve two perplexing cases that may be tied together in New York Times bestselling author J. A. Jance's thrilling tale of suspense that brings to life Arizona's Cochise County and the desert Southwest in all its beauty and mystery.

An old woman, a hoarder, is dying of emphysema in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. In cleaning out her house, her daughter, Liza Machett, discovers a fortune in hundred dollar bills hidden in the tall stacks of books and magazines that crowd every corner.

Tracing the money's origins will take Liza on a journey that will end in Cochise County, where Sheriff Joanna Brady is embroiled in a personal mystery of her own. A man she considers a family friend is found dead at the bottom of a hole in a limestone cavern near Bisbee. And now there is the mystery of Liza and the money. Are the two disparate cases connected? It's up to Joanna to find out.

(2014) This book grabbed me from the start as Liza Machett is burdened with caring for her dying abusive mother. She finds thousands of dollars worth of old $100 bills stuffed in books that her mother has hoarded in her house. This money sparks an old score of the local mob in Massachusetts that sends Liza running for her life to Bisbee AZ in search of her brother. Only she finds that her path across the country has left many dead friends and family in her wake from mob hits. Also involved is a murderous brother and sister in Bisbee that Joanna must bring to judgement as well. Very good. quick read.Goodreads: Remains of Innocence (Joanna Brady #16)by J.A. Great series. This book was fast paced and an easy read! ( )

Remains of Innocence is an interesting book that took seemingly two different plots with two different story lines and united them. In the story there were many good and kind people who help abused women to find a new life. It is nice to know that such kindness exists. The book was given a solid four star rating in this review. It is highly recommended. ( )

mobsters and child serial killers, pacing was much faster than normal but it worked, the bonus novella was just "meh" ( )

Liza Machett's heart was filled with equal parts dread and fury as she pulled her beater Nissan into the rutted driveway of her mother's place, stopped, and then stepped out to stare at the weedy wasteland surrounding the crumbling farmhouse.

Alvin and I are working the Machett homicide, and we could use your help. Cesar Flores denies having sent this notice. Either he is lying about not sending it or the person who sent it was pretending to be him. Is it possible to verify that one way or the other?
Also could you see about tracking down the contact telephone number listed at the end of the notice? It's now been disconnected, but I need to know who owned it and where it was located.
Thanks, and boy, do I miss you.
