This is the third book in the Wyatt series which I am continuing to enjoy (though not as much as the Hal Challis series or Disher's standalones). Here, Wyatt is hiding out from the failure of his last attempt at a heist when a crooked detective locates him and entices him to Brisbane with talk of a lucrative bank job. Due to some shady dealings a sleepy, and not well-guarded, suburban bank, will briefly hold a couple of million in cash, which should make for easy pickings. Wyatt, still trying to recoup his financial losses from the failed previous job, goes through his meticulous planning process. What could possibly go wrong?

Wyatt is on the run. Everyone is looking for him following the mess-up of his failed attempt to hijack the armored car. He’s determined, in the meantime to get the money back from those who stole it from him (as told in Wyatt #2). As seems to be his lot, others have the same idea and he can trust no one.

The Wyatt series was written before his police procedural series features Hal Challis, a very different character from Wyatt who remains one of the more hard-bitten and amoral anti-heroes I’ve read. There’s very little humor here, just the struggles of a man who wants nothing more than to have his place in the country where he can hold up and rob a few banks every year. He has no interests, few needs or goals and in less capable hands the books would descend into mere shoot-em-ups. Disher instead has created a memorable character. If you like Westlake’s Parker (written under the name Richard Stark) you’ll devour the Wyatt series. On to #4. ( )

Garry Disher wurde 1949 im Süden Australiens geboren und wuchs auf einer Farm auf. 1978 erhielt er ein Stipendium für »Creative Writing« an der kalifornischen Stanford University. Nach weiteren Stationen in England, Italien und Afrika widmete er sich mehr und mehr dem Schreiben. Inzwischen gehen über dreißig Bücher auf sein Konto, darunter preisgekrönte Kinderbücher, Sachbücher, Romane - und natürlich Krimis. Sein erster Wyatt-Roman Gier wurde 2000 mit dem Deutschen Krimi-Preis ausgezeichnet. 2002 erhielt er diese Auszeichnung erneut für Drachenmann.
