Summary: this book is about Francis Drake, his life, and his accomplishments. The way his story is told is with a unique drawing style where the people all look like they are still babies or at least very short, as well as a rhyme-like narration.
Review: This book unlike the other biographies, was more interested I believe in entertaining rather than explaining, or was wanting to present it in a unique way with the word choice it had.

This book is the children's book version of a biography of Sir Francis Drake. The story tells of his explorations and encounters with the Spaniards. I'm fond of how the garb is depicted and the detail of each illustration. The story includes rhyming which is a fun touch to engage students in the story. ( )

Sir Francis Drake was a young sailor who went to the Spanish lands. While there the spanish tried to rob them, but Drake and his men held them off. He went back to England, but he would go back to Spain again to get his revenge. After attacking Spain Drake found out that they were rebuilding. So he went back and conquered Spain once in for all. This is a biography about the famous english explorer and his journey around the world. This would be a good book to accompany lessons on early explorers and famous people in history. ( )

With its comical cartoons, "Sir Francis Drake: His Daring Deeds" will be attractive to many fourth graders. However, the book is written entirely in verse and will probably be hard for many readers to understand. I envision the majority of my students just looking at the pictures. (There is a cartoon on page eight of a sailor's naked bottom, and will probably be immediately noticed.) Gerrard does not specifically mention Drake's exploration of the California coast, but since he was definitely here, I am including this book in a "European Explorers and California Missions" text set. If students want to find out more information about Sir Francis Drake, they will have to look elsewhere. ( )
