The principle of "If it flies, drives, or fornicates, it’s cheaper to rent it." may have made me laugh, but there is some truth to it. At least the way one of the main characters' friends sees it. And certainly, this thought has some relevance to a story about a rent boy and his client. But the focus here is the question about the point at which renting is, actually, no longer an option; and not for financial reasons, but actually on emotional grounds.

This background understanding made the story fascinating to me to begin with, but it quickly became obvious that there are other reasons. There is the slight role reversal from the "normal" fare of older Dom/younger sub, added to which Nick, the younger Dom, is also a rent boy and the (theoretically) in-charge older client, Spencer, is the sub. This leads to some interesting dynamics in their relationship. Then we have the masochistic tendencies that Spencer discovers, which (luckily) fit perfectly with Nick's sadistic traits. And finally, there is the fact we only hear from Spencer, so we know as little about what Nick is all about as Spencer does. It increased the suspense, and the questions I had, as well as the shock, when Nick reaches his hard limit and everything just – stops.

Spencer is in a professional and personal rut and super stressed. He hasn’t been getting what he needs sexually for a while, and finally follows his friend's advice to visit Market Garden, an exclusive club providing rent boys for various needs. His surprise at finding Nick and having him almost read his mind is only matched by the heat that develops between them. Spencer slowly discovers that he actually likes pain, and enters an agreement with Nick for a once-a-week 'subscription' so they can explore Spencer's preferences.

Of course, that also allows Nick to truly indulge in his own fantasies, to the point where he can see the professional detachment needed in his job slip. His sudden withdrawal once that limit is crossed was as shocking to me as it was to Spencer, and the attempts at understanding that follow were interesting and showed how deeply involved the two of them really were.

The passion in this book is extremely high, and the constant surprise and delight Spencer experiences as Nick teaches him new things was wonderful. If you like your BDSM stories on the edgier side yet don't want to veer into the impersonal, if you enjoy following a true journey of discovery between a sub and a Dom with some interesting relationship dynamics thrown in, and if you're looking for a hot read with an interesting twist, then you will probably like this book.

3.5 stars. This book wasn't as good as the previous books for me. I think Nick was selfish, and I'm annoyed that Spencer took him back so easily. I get Nick being freaked out but disappearing and lying and only coming back to Spencer cuz he saw him with another Dom is really F'd up. I'm not into the BDSM scene myself, but from all of the books I've read, these relationships are built on trust. How does Spencer just get back with Nick and trust him after all of this? Didn't make sense to me. ( )
