Pratt is a sadly (and undeservedly) neglected author in the field of popular history. Preble's Boys builds on the fact all but one of the naval heroes of the War of 1812 served as junior officers under Commodore Preble during the conflict with the Barbary Pirates. Many of those officers then became the new leaders of the Navy after the the war. So, America's naval doctrine, long before Admiral Mahan, had been set by veterans of the Barbary Coast conflict; Preble's boys. A useful guide to the beginnings of U.S. naval traditions. (
