Nonfiction. Humor (Nonfiction.) HTML:

On the one hand, nobody wants to be a dick. On the other hand, dicks are everywhere! They cut in line, talk behind our backs, recline into our seats, and even have the power to morph into trolls online. Their powers are impressive, but with a little foresight and thoughtfulness, we can take a stand against dickishness today. How Not to Be a Dick is packed with honest and straightforward advice, but it also includes playful illustrations showing two well-meaning (but not always well behaved) young people as they confront moments of potential dickishness in their everyday lives. Sometimes they falter, sometimes they triumph, but they always seek to find a better way. And with their help, you can too.

Basically "How to be act like a decent human being". Alternative titles: "The Good Guy Greg Manual". "How To Blend In Amongst Humans: A Guide for Robots / Aliens".

Easy to dismiss as gimmicky because a lot of it is "common sense", and are about social skills that everybody should have been able to learn by the time they are in their twenties. It is sad though that I can think of a few people who could benefit from reading this. I'm sure Sheldon would have found it illuminating.

The section on work especially made a lot of sense, and would have been helpful to me when I was straight out of college and starting on my first job. ( )

Chock full of very good, very practical advice that applies to everyone, I was still ultimately a bit disappointed by this. It lacked the biting sarcasm I expected from the title (which is, 100% why I bought the book in the first place). There is a high level of dryish humour, but nothing like I'd hoped for from a book called How Not to Be a Dick.

Also, I'm left completely confused by the target audience: it clearly includes etiquette for both kids and adults, but there are language and situational references that are not kid-friendly. I get that part of the humour is meant to be the Dick-and-Jane theme, but solid advice on doing homework and dealing with schoolyard bullying is side-by-side with getting drunk at office parties and how to handle job performance reviews.

Still, very cool retro feel to the illustrations and definitely full of good information. ( )

A provocative title but really just good advice on how to get along with all kinds in this world. ( )

An entertaining yet informative guide, How Not to Be a Dick managed to make reading about etiquette less of a pain. The illustrations were a cute accompaniment to the advice that was being given. I believe this is geared towards young adults, likely those just entering the workforce because the advice seemed to cover a fair number of scenarios for teens or perhaps college folk, but also the work environment and dating/flirting.

If anything this would make an interesting table top book for guests to flip through and an excellent gag gift for that friend in your life who is constantly stumbling with the faux pas. ( )
