When Sebastian Walton was sixteen, he got his first kiss from a guy, and that guy was his best friend's older brother, Pablo Rivera. But after the scorching kiss in the Rivera's swimming pool, Pablo acted like nothing happened between them. Six years later, Sebastian is close to graduating from college and poised to achieve his dream of going to medical school. During a semester break, he visits his old neighborhood and the Riveras, where openly gay Pablo, now a police officer, is sexier than ever and determined to win Sebastian for good. Sebastian is the younger of the two, and he has never forgotten the kiss Pablo gave him when he was sixteen. At the time, Sebastian was just about to figure out that he might be gay, but he feared his family's reaction, so he pretended he was straight. Seven years later when he runs into Pablo again he is still pretending. He also still has a crush on Pablo, except this time he gives in to his feelings and they start a physical relationship. Not that this really makes Sebastian change his mind about coming out – that takes him a little longer.
Pablo admits kissing a sixteen-year-old when he himself was nineteen may not have been the best idea, but he couldn’t resist. He still can’t, and that part is easy. Getting Sebastian to admit to them being a couple is more difficult. Pablo is out, even as a cop, so he knows it isn’t easy and he puts no pressure on Sebastian. Still, his expectation of being open about their relationship is clear.
Much remains unspoken in this very short story, and there is no intrusion of the harsh reality of being out, other than Sebastian's fear of his family rejecting him. But then, the focus of the book is the love blossoming between the two men, not really anything much beyond that. If you like short, sweet stories with cute characters, if you're looking for a "second chance fulfilled", and if you enjoy stories with very little conflict and a feel-good ending, then you will like this short book.
