Edie is an awesomely strong stubborn woman who doesn't know what not caring even looks like. She's not living some perfectly charmed life. She's real with all the messiness of real feelings and relationships. She comes to realizations about her character and blindness to the obvious. Shes amazing and yet so human all at the same time.

The richness of this world as it continues to grow just feels me with so much squee.

Thank you so much for a wonderful story!! More please! ( )

Trigger warning: gang violence

Each novel gets better as the series progresses.

Shapeshifted picks up a little bit after Moonshifted left off. After Edie was shunned, she lost her job at County Hospital, meaning the protection that the Shadows gave to Jake, her brother, was gone. He’s back on drugs, and Edie is back to worrying if he’ll overdose and die in a ditch somewhere. She’s working overnights at a sleep clinic now. Not only would her previous job have no record of her working there (so Edie has a gap in her résumé), but none of her coworkers remember her either (so no current references). When Edie runs into her former coworker Gina in town, it becomes obvious the Shadows wiped her memory.

“You don’t remember me?”

She frowned deeply. “No. Should I?”

I blinked. Oh, no. I’d told the Shadows I didn’t want them to change my memories—maybe instead they’d changed everyone else’s?

“I’m sorry—I must have you confused with someone else,” I said. It wasn’t worth Gina wondering who the Shadows had stolen away from her for the rest of her day. I’d been the one to choose remembering. I didn’t think she would have chosen to forget. (Alexander 111)

I truly think that Cassie Alexander grows significantly as an author with each book. Shapeshifted was an excellent read, full of twists, original ideas and a fresh outlook on some of the paranormal creepy-crawlies we think we know very well.

Thrown into a very normal life, shunned by all supernatural, Edie is bored and depressed working as a nurse in a sleep clinic. She feels like she lost direction and drive, and when she finds out that her mother has got cancer and only have few months left to live, she is determined to make a deal with the Shadows again to save her.

At the same time she starts working at a clinic in a very rough, forgotten area of town, ruled by Latino-American gangs and as usual ends up in a thick of a territorial battle with plenty of black sorcery.

Shapeshifted is very fast-paced, emotional and full of character. Edie herself acquires a wonderful sidekick, Olympio, a young boy who works for his grandfather - healer, a curandero. He helps her negotiate the dangerous places she ends up with. We also meet a few familiar faces (who? I can't say! to avoid spoilers) who you might say have an unfinished business with Edie.

This is an excellent urban fantasy series, heartfelt, driven and refreshing if you are tired of tough, kickass heroines who can do it all, and want to read about someone a little bit more human... Recommended.

Wow I can't say how much I love this series. I wish Edie and Asher would have so many more adventures together. I miss this series very much. The start os this book is a bit sad because I felt bad for the Edie but things pick up for her as usually. ( )
