A Level 1 Beginning to Read DK reader, “Rockets and Spaceships” is an engaging, easy-to-read text for beginning readers. Full-color photographs fill each page and help readers learn about the powerful rockets that carry people and satellites into space. A special Picture Word List is included to help strengthen reading skills. Perfect for beginning science education or for youngsters interested in rockets, astronauts, and space exploration.

Highly recommended. ( )

This is a picture book about rockets and spaceships and briefly tells about what they do and how they work. The back of this book also gives a glossary of words that students may not know that could be useful to read to the student before reading the book. Depending on the students reading level this book would be good for a shared reading or guided reading.

This was a great non fiction book. It was applicable to several age groups. The information was accurate and portrayed in an interesting way. The text used extended examples when describing how the rocket ships and satellites worked. An example of this is when the author describes a rocket launch and how the space shuttle detaches from the launcher in mid air and the launcher part falls back to the ground after reaching a specific altitude. The examples were easy to understand such as when the author describes the mars rover. The author simply says that it goes to mars and takes pictures while gathering rock samples. This book also incorporated sound effects such as RUMMBBBBLLLEEEE and ROOOARRRRR. This helps to add excitement to an informational book. The book was accompanied by actual photographs as apposed to illustrations. The pictures were wonderful and high quality showing off all of the different items used to learn about space. The main idea in this book is space and educating students about many different objects astronauts and scientist use to explore and learn about space. ( )

I'm a fan of DK books.

They're simple. They're informative. They're cheap. If your child is too young to read, they're perfectly good read-aloud books.

What more can you ask for when stocking your kid's library?

This one is not my favorite, probably because neither niece has shown a real interest in space yet. It's full of facts and well-done pictures, however, it does jump around a little. It might have been written in a more coherent manner.

Still, if your kid is very into space, I would recommend this book. ( )
