The narrative is a story of daily lives – fishing and farming, as well as the celebrations and tragedies.

The writing is beautiful and atmospheric. The characters are vivid. It is a study in contrasts between Petter, the dreamer, and Mona, the practical one. It reminds us to appreciate happiness when it arises.

It is not a book for anyone seeking action. The majority is a quiet, reflective story of community. I loved the first three quarters of this book. It takes an unexpected turn toward the end, which significantly changes the tone. It is a novel about the power of nature and the fragility of life.

Jouduin voittamaan omat ennakkoluuloni lukeakseni Jään. Ehjä juuri, koska sitä on kehuttu paljon. Jää on niitä kirjoja, jotka on luettava loppuun voidakseen muodostaa mielipiteen. Loppupuolen tragedia muuttaa kaiken. Lundberg kuvaa uskoa aidon tuntuisesti. Hänen kuvaamanaan ihmisissä ja saaristoyhteisössä on lämpöä ja karheutta, mutta myös vikansa. Ihmisten ymmärtämisen lisäksi tällaiset tarinat auttavat parhaimmillaan ymmärtämään, miten nykyinen Suomi syntyi viime sotien jälkeen. Pastorskan kalaisia ihmisiä on varmasti tarvittu. ( )

Hieno tarina saaristoon muuttavasta papista ja hänen perheestään sekä saarella asuvista kyläläisistä. Toinen maailmansota on juuri päättynyt ja ilmapiiri on toiveikas, tulevaisuutta rakennetaan yhdessä. Lundberg kuvaa ihmissuhteita taitavasti, jäätä, joka muodostuu ihmisten väleihin. ( )

Aivan loistava kirja. Yksi parhaista suomalaisista mitä olen lukenut. Haluaisin halata Lundbergia, niin hienosti hän on kuvannut ihmistyyppejä ja niiden välisiä suhteita. Olen melkein sanaton. Loppu ei ollut sellainen kuin olisin "halunnut", mutta ei se ainakaan lässähtänyt! Kiitos. ( )
