"It's really very classical," he said, "like the voyage of Ulysses; I, Ulysses, you the water nymph Calypso, drifting in that golden ship of Romance-" "Calypso was a land nymph," she observed, absently, "if accuracy interests you as much as your monologue." Checked and surprised, he began to laugh at his own discomfiture; and she, elbow on the gunwale, small hand cupping her chin, watched him with an expressionless directness that very soon extinguished his amusement and left him awkward in the silence. Sheila Cardross falls in love with Garry Hamil, who has been hired as a landscape architect for her father's Palm Beach estate; unfortunately she is secretly married to Louis Malcourt, whom she wed in haste upon discovering she was adopted. Though they have never lived together as a couple, she refuses to bring disgrace upon her family by divorcing him. Louis, meanwhile, is courting Garry's cousin, as well as several other girls at the Palm Beach casino.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this book. It was a long but enjoyable read; however, I don't think I'll keep it around for rereading. What struck me most was that although it was published in 1914, the attitudes toward relationships and family honor look back to Victorian standards, rather than ahead to the 1920s. It's also a fascinating portrayal of the lives of the idle rich in a Palm Beach surrounded by wilderness and populated almost entirely by wealthy northerners on winter retreat.
