This is a collection of letters, articles, and notes by noted folk song promoter Pete Seeger, written over the years. I loved his very early letter to his mother asking permission to purchase a banjo. The letters/articles are organized into various chapters such as World Travels, The Early Years, Life of a Performer, etc. You really get to know Seeger the man and his thoughts and it is too bad there are not more folks in this world who think the way Seeger thought - uniting people through song not war, equal pay, equal rights, caring for the environment, and value for the old (non machine) ways of doing things. The editors have done a great job of providing footnotes to help identify the people or events that Seeger is discussing. A great book for any fan of Seeger. ( ) Capsule review: For people who really enjoy or need primary sources on this topic. Personal reflections: This book is actual excerpts from letters and other writings by Seeger himself. Tim and I are real fans, but after having this sit on the shelves for a while, we decided we weren't fans enough to plow through primary sources for information. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
Long an icon of American musical and political life, Pete Seeger has written eloquently in a diverse array of publications but nowhere is his life story more personally chronicled than in these, his private writings, documents and letters stored for decades in his family barn. Pete Seeger: His Life in His Own Words, collects Seeger's letters, notes, published articles, rough drafts, stories and poetry - creating the most intimate picture yet available of Seeger as a musician, an activist and a family man. The book covers the passions, personalities and experiences of a lifetime of struggle - from the pre-WWII labour movement and the Communist Party, to Woody Guthrie, the Civil Rights movement and the struggle against the war in Vietnam. The portrait that emerges is not of a saint, but a flesh-and-blood man, struggling to understand his time and his place. Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
